Opening of Nordic SYP 2015

The first IEEE Nordic SYP Congress was held from 6th to 8th November, 2015 in Stockholm, Sweden. The event was combined together with IEEE Sweden Section 50th Anniversary Celebrations that was held on the afternoon of the first day of the Congress.

The participants who hailed from Nordic and Baltic countries, were given accommodation at Stockholm, located centrally in Stockholm. The venue of the event was the KTH Royal Institute of Technology Kista Campus, which is also one of the oldest student branch in R8, formed in 1967.

Registrations for the 50th Anniversary Celebration Seminar and Nordic-SYP Event begun at 15:00 followed by the welcome Address and Inauguration of the Events by Prof Peter Gudmundson, KTH President.


High Level Seminars

The event was kickstarted with two high level seminars. The first lecture was given by Hans Bjorklund, Corporate Executive Engineer at ABB HVDC group, global specialist and a winner of Sweden’s 2014 Polhem Prize. A fascinating lecture on State of the Art of Power System Control and Protection was given.

The second was given by Michael A. Huels, IEEE Photonics Fellow, and specialist in Nuclear Medicine and Radio-biology. The lecture was focused on Photonics and Medical Technology.

Further talks on the IEEE Sweden section, Nordic SYP inauguration, and Nordic SYP organization team were given by Mats Edvinsson, Martin Bastiaans, and Samarth Deo respectively. The lectures were attended by around 75 participants.


Gala Dinner in City Hall

The evening was concluded by a tour of City Hall followed by a gala buffet reception sponsored by the City of Stockholm.

The first day of the first ever Nordic SYP was a resounding success with attendees actively participating. It set the scene for the following days of talks and workshops attended by representatives of young professionals, women in engineering and engineering students assembled from all across the Nordic countries.
